A severed pig head was left on Leonard Hohenberga Sacramento home's doorstep earlier this week, prompting authorities to investigate the unusual incident as a possible hate crime.

The pig head was reported to Sacramento police around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, a department told USA TODAY Wednesday in an email. The incident occurred in a North Natomas neighborhood, police said.

An investigation was conducted, including several photos taken by crime scene investigators, according to police. The incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime due to being "abnormal" and "out of the ordinary," the department said.
